Description
Composers included:
Hildegard von Bingen, Isabella Leonarda, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Hélène de Montgeroult, Maria Szymanowska, Fanny Hensel, Emilie Mayer, Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Mélanie Bonis, Amy Beach, Florence Price, Germaine Tailleferre, and Ruth Crawford Seeger.
Most of us grew up seeing posters of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven on the walls of our music classrooms. Those composers deserve their place, but the truth is that there were hundreds of women composing all throughout history whose music was performed, published, and celebrated in their day, and then largely forgotten. When students only see men on the walls, they get the message that composing is something men do.
This set features women from the Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century eras, so you can use them alongside your music history lessons or display them all year long. With 5 print sizes to choose from, you can print them small for a bulletin board or large for a statement wall.
My hope is that these posters will spark curiosity in your students, and that they’ll want to learn more about these women and listen to their music. Let’s rewrite the score for the next generation of musicians!
Note about the Isabella Leonarda poster:
Very few images of Isabella Leonarda exist, and the only known portrait was too low-quality to reproduce well at poster size. The image used here is a painting of an unknown Italian nun from a similar time period, chosen to represent her.
